معهد موسكو للطيران
Moscow State Aviation Institute
(University of Aerospace Technology) offers instruction and scientific research at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels in modern engineering technologies and the construction and design of various flight vehicles and aerospace systems for the aircraft and aerospace industry.
Why Study at the Moscow State Aviation Institute?
MAI is committed to give the most advanced education in aviation and space sciences.
The level and quality of instruction is well known both nationally and internationally throughout aircraft and aerospace institutions, design offices, industrial enterprises and companies, flight control centers, scientific research centers. Courses at the institute offer superb instruction at the theoretical level as well as numerous opportunities for practical application. Tuition and fees are reasonable for all.
Our programs are directed towards a wide range of professions.
Available only at the Moscow State Aviation Institute:
Engineering education in the full spectrum of aerospace specialties.
Introductory pilot training at the MAI airdrome (The institute, however, does not offer a specific professional program leading to pilot certification).
Undergraduates have the opportunity for practical experience in a broad range of professions: from a shop steward to a general designer.
Moscow State Aviation Institute (MAI) was founded in 1930 when institutions which specialized in aviation became advanced enough to join into one aircraft engineering education center.
Until the present, the development of Russian aviation and astronautics was based mostly on the activities of institute professors and alumnus.
The designers Tupolev A.N. (class "TU" aircraft), Mikoyan A.I. (class "MIG" aircraft), Jakovlev A.S. (class "JAK" aircraft) were the first Institute professors. Well-known academicians, scientists and several astronauts number amongst MAI alumni.
Moscow State Aviation Institute is a large scientific research center. Significant scientific ideas are developed here; new technological principles are discovered; new devices are invented and constructed. Five fundamental scientific discoveries for dynamic systems have been patented; the optoelectronic device "Photon" designed here is now operating in outer space; innovative power sources based on new principles invented and constructed here are currently used in aircraft and aerospace system units, etc.
All University staff and students can join in this work in the creation or design of new engines and devices, and even new flight vehicles; 14 types of them are wide world known for 6 records in aviation sports. Recently the new superlight small-size aircraft "Aviatica" was designed and constructed in MAI by staff and students. This aircraft is now indispensable for certain conditions and thus is in very great demand in this country and abroad. Now there are about 200 pieces of "Aviatica" aircraft in the sky all over the world, and this vehicle was completely created and produced in MAI.
The total of Moscow State Aviation Institute alumni number in the hundreds of thousands. They work in design offices, plants, repair shops, scientific research institutes, universities, laboratories, aviation companies, in the center for Astronauts Training and other aircraft and aerospace engineering and technological institutions.
Currently MAI is a large educational and scientific center with approximately 2000 professors and tutors, 4000 scientific staff, engineers and personnel, and 14000 students.
Since 1992 the Moscow State Aviation Institute has been headed by Professor Matveenko Alexander M., Doctor, Academician. He is a 1962 MAI graduate.
In 1993 Moscow State Aviation Institute was given one more name: "University of AerospaceTechnology".
The name "Aviation Institute" is used synonymously with the name "University of Aerospace Technology" based on the departmental structure and scientific degrees conferred.
The organizational structure of the university is based on 11 separate schools which are headed by deans. Each school consists of several departments. (There are a total of fifty-six departments at the university).
Departments are the basic divisions of Institute training structure. Each department is specialized in one sphere of knowledge and teaching and has specially skilled teaching and technical staff. Departments provide study programs, courses and textbooks; develop new methods of training; conduct lectures, seminars, and scientific research; personally advise all undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates scientific research and practical activities and graduate specialists and professionals corresponding to the department specialization.
Available for student use are approximately 128 laboratories; 3 design offices (light avionics, heavy avionics and small space satellites); several computer centers; an experimental plant; a training facility for sport-aviation use and an airport near Moscow.
Two Scientific Research Institutes - Applied Mechanics & Electrodynamics and Low Temperature Research - make up part of the MAI structure.
Subsidiary scientific and technical subdivisions are equipped with unique experimental devices, and maintain an inventory of both historically significant and modern samples of airplanes, helicopters, space vehicles, engines control system units, etc.
The Moscow State Aviation Institute operates five branch-campus programs in other towns (including the world-famous Baikonor space center in Kazakhstan)
The following eleven schools are currently offered:
Aircraft Engineering - school 1
Flight Vehicle Engines - school 2
Control Systems, Informatics and Electric Power Engineering - school 3
Flight Vehicle Radioelectronics - school 4
Economics and Management - school 5
Aerospace Engineering - school 6
Robotics and Intelligent systems - school 7
Applied Mathematics and Physics - school 8
Applied Mechanics - school 9
Humanities - school 10
Pre-School - school 11 - As most of the instructions at the university is in Russian, all international students study the Russian language and basic sciences (conducted in Russian at this school)
Scientific degrees and certificates / Masters Degree
After successful completion of the full course at their chosen school all graduates are conferred a Master Degree in Engineering (ME or Msc) and are provided with a Degree Certificate in both Russian and English. The institute does not offer programs leading a Bachelors Degree (with the exception of one specialty at the N5 School). The full graduate course is 5 years, 6 months in duration at all schools plus 10 months in Pre-School for foreign students. The full course curricula requires a rigorous number of required courses, annual thesis or projects, graduate thesis or project. Students can enroll in electives of their choice, although this is not required. Schools provide training both in applied sciences and in engineering practice, and also provide a fundamental sciences background. Students attend lectures, seminars, practice classes; they work in labs and design offices, run individual research.
MAI offers a special graduate course for those holding Bachelors degrees who wish to acquire a Masters degree. The programs are not rigorous and the department chosen adopts it individually to the student's education level and specialty. The Degree Certificate conferred is of the stereotype form.
Postgraduate level is open to the successful graduates from MAI or international applicants overseas whose qualifications conform to MAI specialty and education level. Course duration is three years. After completion of the course and thesis defense, postgraduates are conferred a Ph.D. (or Sc.D.) and are provided with a special State Certificate in both Russian and English.
MAI offers specialized individual programs leading to skill improvement or to a second career. It is of 1 or 2 years in duration and can be offered in Russian as well as in English. The prerequisite for entry is a Bachelor or Master Degree in any engineering or aviation specialty. After completion of the course, students are rewarded a special certificate, but are not recognized as to have any other degree.
Special Russian language courses and programs are offered for everybody at Pre-School: general Russian communication; program aimed to prepare students for Institute studies; intermediate and advanced courses; professional Russian. There are no prerequisites for applicants. Special Certificate.
